Last month we shook up the Collective format – in the best way!
For the last six years, we've put out two pre-recorded videos every month, one from me and one from a guest! After surveying Collective members and teaching a fully immersive online Family Bootcamp with digital office hours and multiple live classes, I realized that connection was exactly what the Collective was missing.
So we now release one pre-recorded video (either one from myself or a guest!) and have at least one live class/group meet up every month. So far this month we've had THREE lives inside the Collective:
1. Editing update! In this class I walked you guys through my newest editing methods…goodbye SMAL Presets (kinda), hello Evoto!
2. In another live, we learned how to Digitally Location Scout! I went through Collective member submitted locations/cities and showed the process I use anytime I'm traveling to a new state or looking for a fresh location in my hometown!
3.And lastly, we did a test-run of Collective Connections – a Google Meet up where I got to hang out and chat with a handful of Collective members!

If I had to pick one thing about being a photography educator that I love, its watching the light bulb moments during workshops…but the worst part about workshops is the fact that they’re limited to one to two days. Can you imagine if, as a child, you had one day to figure out cursive writing? Or in high school they introduced the Pythagorean Theorem on Monday, and by Wednesday you were tested on it and moving on to the next chapter?
It’s 2023, so a year of college courses covering photography probably is excessive (and most likely would be wrought with outdated teachings), but what if you could get a grasp on the fundamentals of photography — specifically in this course family photography — in two months?
Last year, I rolled out my first ever 60 day intensive Newborn Bootcamp, and I don’t think I could have dreamed how perfect it was going to go. Each student submitted specific lighting, posing and styling images for a pre-class assessment, and I reviewed each and every image giving feedback and most importantly, goals to set for our 2 month long course.
I was blown away by the transformations, whether it was the graded work, weekly access to me through video office hour calls, or piece by piece, broken down videos building on skills to transition into the next steps, in nearly 15 years of teaching, I had never seen growth like I was seeing with the first 40 students in the Newborn Bootcamp.
So now it’s time to apply the same educational structure to one of my favorite topics -- lighting non-newborn subjects and how that ties into location scouting and in home shooting. Then following that up with a family posing flow that makes sense for all families and photographers, along with interacting, prompts for different ages and stages, and then finally editing.

I was so tired of struggling with posing, lighting, confidence in myself, my work...every session was so stressful. I had been following Rachel's work for years and purchased a few of her other videos so I jumped on the opportunity to have constant learning! I was instantly in tears when things just started clicking...lighting was the biggest struggle for me. After watching the lighting video it just clicked and I haven't struggled since! Posing was another stress. Then she started doing the deconstruction series and everything just made sense! And lastly her unsoothing method...game changer...I would panic if the baby wouldn't settle, now I get excited lol! I love what I do again. I'm confident in myself now. I don't get stressed.
